Elephant Safari
What is Elephant safari ?
Does the thought of a guided tour of the jungles on elephant-back grab you?
Most wildlife enthusiasts point out that lumbering through dense, mysterious
jungles on an elephant is a wonderful experience.
Elephant safaris within sanctuaries and game parks are a great way to get a
vantage view of the wildlife. It may take you a few minutes to get used to the
swaying movement of the elephant. Don’t fret. Just remember that the safari
elephant is trained and so is the mahout, who rides with you.
Where to go ?
Explore the wonders of India’s wildlife sanctuaries on an elephant. Whether
it’s Corbett Park in Uttaranchal, Kaziranga in Assam, or Periyar Wildlife
Sanctuary in Kerala dump your jeep in favour of the majestic elephant to savour
all the jungle sights and sounds. The best time to go on an elephant safari is
between November and June. Other elephant safari destinations include
Bandhavgarh National Park and Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh, Amber Fort
and Harmara in Rajasthan.
What you need to know ?
An elephant safari ensures that you are as close to the action in the wild
without actually being a part of it. If you are a first-timer on an elephant
safari, the thought of sitting high up on the animal as it trudges across a
forest may be a little scary. You may even begin to long for the security
offered by a jeep. But keep reminding yourself that animals in the wild are far
more comfortable with elephants, which are familiar creatures to them, rather
than noisy safari vehicles. You will enjoy the leisurely ride so long as you can
fend off the army of insects in the jungles.
What you must carry ?
There’s nothing very special you have to pack on an elephant safari. Travel
light, wear dull-coloured, light clothing and carry a first-aid box. Don’t
forget your camera.
