What is a Camel safari ?
A camel safari is the closest you will come to experiencing the life of the
Bedouins — that tribe of hardy, mysterious men who crisscross the desert on
camel-back, minus compasses or maps. However, for modern man route navigation in
the desert (and anywhere else!) is an acquired art, so you must be accompanied
by camel guides who understand the shifting sands of the terrain. A camel safari
is an exciting way to explore the desert. Always take the advice of your guide
about food, water and weather conditions.
Where to go ?
The Thar desert in Rajasthan is the most preferred destination for camel
safaris in India. Some of the most popular destinations here are Jodhpur and
Jaisalmer.
What you need to know ?
The best time to go on a camel safari is between September and March. Avoid
the blistering summers. Packages extend from 2–16 days, which include stays in
tented camps and fort hotels, depending on the tour operator you choose. A group
of at least two people is necessary for the operator to organise the safari.
What you must carry ?
On a camel safari, you would certainly need a good riding saddle. Most of the
equipment is usually organised by the tour operator as part of the package.
Always carry a torch, clothes that will keep you warm during chilly nights, a
hat to protect your head from the sun and toilet paper if you’re camping out.
